How to Support Self-Advocacy of Autistic People at Work

Join Zsofia Utry Employment Specialist from Autism Understanding Scotland for a presentation and discussion on how to remove barriers and enable autistic people to self-advocate at work and why that is important. Disability inclusion is still not a mainstream practice in the UK. Most employers have little understanding of how to support their autistic workforce effectively. Employers could learn a lot more to anticipate workplace adjustment needs of disabled people, but autistic people also greatly value when their personal experiences are considered at decisions about them. The current best practice in user experience research and design is when users are treated as equal partners/collaborators in the design of a service or product for them. For this to happen for autistic people in work, autistic people need to feel their voices are welcome, heard, valued, and can be active participants in making work ‘work’ for them. We would like to facilitate and encourage more conversations on enabling self-advocacy of autistic employees in organisations for the benefit of all.
